A bursectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that cushions bones, tendons, and muscles near the joints. Bursae reduce friction and allow smooth movement of muscles and bones. However, when a bursa becomes inflamed due to repetitive motion, trauma, infection, or underlying conditions such as arthritis, it can cause a painful condition called bursitis. In cases where non-surgical treatments such as medications, physical therapy, or injections fail to relieve pain and restore function, a bursectomy may be recommended. The surgery can be performed arthroscopically or through open surgery, depending on the severity and location of the affected bursa. Most commonly, bursectomies are done in the shoulder, hip, elbow, or knee joints. While a bursectomy is generally considered a safe procedure, there are potential complications. These may include infection, bleeding, damage to surrounding tissues, stiffness, or limited range of motion in the affected joint. In some cases, nerve damage can occur, leading to numbness or weakness. Additionally, although the surgery removes the inflamed bursa, it does not guarantee the prevention of bursitis recurrence in other areas. Recovery usually involves physical therapy to regain joint mobility and strength, and patients can typically return to normal activities within a few weeks, depending on the joint involved and the extent of the surgery.
